Mixing Technology

Mixing is central to the vast majority of processes in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, water, mineral extraction and hydrocarbon processing industries. Whether blending, dosing, dispersing, carrying out chemical reactions, operating a bioreactor, formulating a product, aerating, stripping, extracting or crystallising, close attention to mixing can yield substantial economic, safety, environmental and product benefits.

Our Scope

BHRSolutions uniquely brings together fundamental understanding of single and multiphase mixing, knowledge of the design, scale up and performance of mixing equipment (both conventional and novel) and practical applications experience. Our work over the years has included:

  • Most common configurations of stirred tank and in-line mixers, with most common impeller types
  • A variety of feeding, dosing and settling arrangements for different industries and applications
  • Miscible and immiscible liquids, gas-liquid, solid-liquid and three phase mixing
  • Mixing in the turbulent, transitional and laminar regions
  • Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, and the measurement of rheology and fluid properties
  • Measurement of flow patterns, power draw, mixing times, mass transfer, hold up, bubble and droplet size, solids concentration and suspension and draw-down
  • Feed arrangements and flow patterns in motion - at sea, or for aerospace or automotive uses
  • Scale-up and scale-down

Research and Development

  • Join FMP - our world-leading consortium in Fluid Mixing Processes - for access to comprehensive mixing design guides and software and a confidential, rapidly growing databank on the design and performance of stirred tanks and in-line mixers
  • See Water and Waste Water for our Water and Waste Mixing (WWM) consortium providing information tailored to your needs
  • Contract us for confidential single-client research work on your own mixing or separation problem.

Consultancy

Improve the performance of your plant or equipment using one of our consultancy services:

  • Site or plant audit: use our specialist experience to assess your plant and recommend solutions to your trouble-spots.
  • Physical or computational modelling and testing accessing our unique facilities and expertise
  • Mixer design services to audit your designs, or to create designs to your requirements
  • Independent assessment of manufacturers' equipment and recommendations
  • Equipment manufacturers can use our Product Development services to develop your own designs

Facilities

Our facilities for investigating mixing and separation include a wide range of fully-instrumented mixing vessels, with most common impeller types, and variable baffle and feed arrangements, and a range of in-line mixers, together with techniques such as LDA. Our specialist model-makers can create custom-built prototypes of your specialist systems, and our instrumentation experts can advise on the best techniques for measuring a wide range of parameters, in our lab or on your site.

Information

  • BHRSolutions runs an IChemE approved training course in Mixing Technology, or can provide customised in-house courses
  • Our specialist staff can deliver their information as custom-built intranets incorporating both the latest advice and your own company procedures for your staff
