The Deep Water
Flume was designed specifically to study the effects of vortex induced
vibrations on long slender structures such as deep water risers.
The faicility
consists of a large steel tank with internal plate steel fabrications
around which the water is made to circulate.
The flow is
generated by two 275 kW Worthington Simpson pump sets, each of which
discharge through a narrow, vertically positioned slit which acts
a s a jet pump. Velocities through the test section are controlled
using gate valves which are positioned immediately downstream of
the pumps. Uniform velocity profiles vary between 2.5 to 6% over
the velocity range. The facility can also be configured to create
non-uniform and stepped velocity profiles
