Testing of Connectors for Subsea Electrical Equipment and Instrumentation

BHRSolutions can provide simulated down hole, subsea environments for the testing of components utilising a range of pressure vessels and temperature controlled chambers that can accommodate a wide range of well operating fluids. Long term installation requirements also mean that ultra low level leakage (ULLL) and permeation become significant phenomena in maintaining sealing integrity.

These systems can be designed and virtually tested by BHRSolutions using specialised permeation testing facilities in combination with FEA based lifetime simulation software for sealing components and a wealth of experimental data on polymer/elastomer materials in oilfield environments.

BHRSolutions' services include:

  • Function and reliability testing of thermocouples, pressure transducers, flowmeters, connectors, motors and cabling.
  • Development of specialised components such as multi-wire penetrators to enable remote monitoring and measurement of devices under test.
  • Compatability, function and permeation testing and simulation of seals and materials used in component construction

Bi-axial Stress/Strain Test Rig
Elastomer sheet is inflated to failure in order to measure the BI-axial stress/strain characteristics of the material. The data is used as an input to a finite element analysis model to allow prediction of explosive decompression damage in seals.

Fluids: Gas, liquid
Test Materials: Elastomers in sheet form
Pressure: To the tensile strength of the test materials
Measurements: Bi-axial stess-strain characteristic

Permeation Test Rig
Permeation testing of simple sheet samples allows easy determination of unique fluid/elastomer interactions. Solubility and diffusion characteristics can be used to determine material perforfance for a range of purposes including:

  • emissions prediction
  • ageing estimation
  • explosive decompression modelling
  • estimating two way diffusion of water vapour and gases across electronic component seals
  • optimising venting for oil and gas pipe liners
  • calculation of pressure losses in high pressure gas containing systems
  • testing efficiency of barrier layers for automotive and petroleum handling systems
Fluids: Gases including mixtures. Flammable and toxic fluids can be accommodated
Test Materials: Elastomers, Plastics in sheet form
Temperature: Up to 200 °C
Pressure: Up to 1,000 bar
Measurements: Temperature, pressure

For further information, please contact us.

Mechanical Seal Material Test Rig
The rig is designed to minimise hydrostatic and hydrodynamic effects in order that face material effects may dominate.

Fluids: Water, automotive coolants, kerosene
Temperature: Up to 110 °C
Interface Load: p to 10 MPa
