Hydraulic Design and Modelling

BHRSolutions' physical and computational modelling services include component and system modelling and testing, and can be applied across the whole lifecycle of an asset:

  • initial feasibility studies
  • component and plant or structure design
  • design proving and testing for legislative compliance
  • establishing operational best practice guidelines
  • retrofit design when requirements change
  • accident or troubleshooting investigations

Specialist modelmakers provide the skills for the construction of physical models for testing and development by our engineers.

Our research programmes have devised excellent instrumentation and techniques for measuring a variety of parameters, and scale-up metrics and appropriate choice of fluids for modelling, as well as a wide range of tested and validated software design guides and simulation programs.

The Benefits

  • functionally demonstrated design
  • ability to compare options
  • performance observation over full operating conditions
  • cost effective assurance of final design

Eye-catching exhibitions!

Systems Covered

  • Cooling water systems - intakes, pumping stations, seal weirs and outfall structures
  • Control structures - dams, spillways, barriers and gates
  • Treatment works - pumping stations, flow distribution systems and process units
  • Process equipment and systems, e.g. mixers and reactors
  • Prototype or actual components - valves, pumps and separators
  • Sealing and containment systems

Physical Modelling
Model tests are of value both for design purposes and as a convenient means of verifying specified performance. Undesirable flow phenomena can arise in complex or non-standard designs and physical modelling may be necessary to predict the effects with certainty. Using the appropriate tools and scaling laws, physical models can be used to measure and assess flow distribution, velocity and pressure variations, flow patterns, sediment deposition, scour and air entrainment

Testing After Construction
When performance investigation is required after construction (sometimes many years after), solutions can be found to problems caused by poor design or changes in operating conditions. Model studies are made without taking the structure out of commission. Also, potential future problems can be identified by subjecting a model to higher than design (or current) parameters, such as flow rate or level.

With over 50 years experience in flow modelling, BHRSolutions delivers technically sound and elegant solutions to complex hydraulic problems and assist in optimising plant design. BHRSolutions' unrivalled expertise in purpose-built models can demonstrate and where necessary improve flow behaviour or design capacity.

Our staff also have access to our range of existing specialist test facilities covering many of the equipment items listed above.

Computational Modelling

  • Finite Element Analysis and CFD applied to flow within complex structures such as settling tanks and clarifiers
  • Spreadsheet-based design calculations for such items as hydraulic profiles of complex structures
  • Analysis of Fluid-Structure interaction including contamination, pipe loading and wear
  • Flowmaster™ for transient analysis of piping systems
