Case Study: Downhole Packer Element

Application
Oil and gas well production tubing

Customer
Downhole Equipment Supplier

Product or Service Supplied
Computational modeling of packer elements using BHR Group's ELASTEQ software.

Problem
Elastomer packer elements have to work in the harsh environment of high temperature, high fluid pressure and aggressive chemicals whilst resisting high mechanical forces. Packers also have to conform to tube bores, which have a considerable degree of out-of-roundness and poor surface finish.

Because of the inaccessibility of the location precise monitoring is not possible, nor is frequent replacement an option. Choice of packer material and knowledge of its likely behaviour are crucial.

Objectives
To model the likely performance of the Packer elements under application conditions.

Approach
A special module of ELASTEQ has been developed, and it has been used for modeling the packer elements. It was used to study the response of a new Packer to mechanical loading in the initial 'setting' process, and then the effects of fluid uptake and cold fluid injection on Packer performance.

Outcome/Benefits
Operational procedures for the packers were drawn up in the light of the modeling results.
