Problem
Storage tanks were used in a chemical plant to contain different processing fluids. These tank assemblies comprised a combination of materials, which had very different thermal expansion coefficients. Some flanges had multiple joints. The maintenance requirements such as retightening bolt force, and sequence, for each joint were significantly different. The sealing of many of the joints in the process plant had given continual problems.

Objectives
To provide recommendations and an implementation plan to reduce leakage at joints.

Approach
BHR Group's Engineers carried out an on-site examination of the joints, and talked to the maintenance personnel. Design features and service conditions were studied.

Outcome/Benefits
A series of recommendations together with an implementation plan were produced to reduce leakage at joints. This included design and maintenance guidelines to reduce loss of costly chemicals and avoid premature shutdown.
