Sealing, Containment and Emissions Case Study:
High Pressure Actuator Seal Modelling

Application
Nuclear Power Stations

Customer
USA Power Generator

Product or Service Supplied
Computational modelling and seal testing

Problem
In nuclear power stations high-pressure actuators are used to power the emergency shut-off valves for main/steam and feed-water systems. The elastomer seals in the actuators have to be in place in a static situation for long periods (leading to stiction and long term compression set), resist explosive decompression, hydraulic fluid and radiation, and yet provide immediate reciprocating sealing performance.

Objectives
To optimise the performance of these critical seals.

Approach
BHRSolutions provided expert consultancy, high-pressure elastomer seal modelling and seal testing services.

Outcome/Benefits
From the study, a high performance sealing arrangement was achieved with optimised elastomer seal material, seal geometry and anti-extrusion device.
