Sealing, Containment and Emissions Case Study:
Process Pump Seals

Application
Food Industry

Customer
The Pump Centre

Product or Service Supplied
Comprehensive survey of food industry process pump applications.

Problem
Many process plants have oversized pump units running at non-optimal speeds. This affects the fluid dynamics around the seal and mechanical aspects of both the pump and seal. In addition, the food industry has special needs:

  • Crevice free hygienic design with long seal life and good clean-in-place characteristics
  • Ability to handle unusual rheologies and a range of solids at high delivery head
  • Construction in corrosion and abrasion resistant food grade materials

Objectives
Better seal housing design to increase seal lifetimes in the process industries.

Approach
BHR Group carried out the survey on pump dependability in the food industry by visiting bakeries, confectionery producers, sauce/soup companies and dairies. Difficult duties with high maintenance and downtime costs were identified.

Outcome/Benefits
Methods to optimise process pump designs are detailed in BHR Group's Seal Housing Design Guide.
