Problem:
Operational problems with pulsator clarifiers at Iver WTW resulted
in unstable sludge blankets and solids carry-over, and led to increased
chemical expenditure.
Objectives:
To look at the flow patterns and mixing regimes within the clarifier
drop-shaft and outlet pipe using CFD, to investigate these phenomena
and improve hydraulic conditions.
|
 |
Approach:
Following a site review of hydraulic factors influencing clarifier
performance, the drop shaft was modelled using CFD. Data from the
study revealed short-circuiting and recirculation phenomena in the
existing design. Modifications and remodelling of the drop shaft
and outlet pipe were undertaken using CFD.
Outcome/Benefits:
The modifications reduced short-circuiting , increased the contact
time for coagulant blending and flocculation and produced a better
mixture qualitiy. The overall improvement in clarifier performance
produced significant savings in chemicals.
