Press Release: Safer Ship Repair in Singapore

An easily manoeuvrable, DIAJET abrasive waterjet cutting machine, custom-designed for use in severe working environments, has been supplied to Gintic Institute of Manufacturing Technology, Singapore. The new machine, which utilises DIAJET's powerful and precise abrasive suspension jet, will be used for cutting access holes and pipe flange bolts in ship repair applications.

Many shipyards carry out repairs and modifications to crude oil tankers. This involves cutting access holes in decks and superstructures, and removing flange bolts. In environments, where oil residues are present, gas torches produce an obvious safety risk. Some of the components are difficult to access and badly corroded, making work with hammers and chisels difficult and time consuming. Abrasive water jetting is a safe cold-cutting method with the ability to cut any material. The challenge for DIAJET Limited was to design equipment which could be easily deployed and which could be adapted to a wide range of cutting tasks using simple manipulators.

The machine supplied was a powerful and rugged 690 bar PLC controlled DIAJET complete with an integral abrasive supply hopper. Its single hose delivery allows the cutting head to operate hundreds of metres below deck, whilst the low cutting head mass and reaction forces ease application and produce precision cold cuts. The system is proving its effectiveness and has already shown that it can quickly cut access holes and flange bolts in flammable conditions with safety.
