Biwater Treatment
Limited has contracted BHR Group Limited to perform physical modelling
of the proposed modifications to Eastbourne STW. The existing process
is being extended on behalf of Southern Water to include secondary
treatment.
Today's needs
of greater capacity and improved utilisation of assets invariably
place demands on existing structures to handle increased flows of
waste water. To ensure structural modifications will be able to
perform satisfactorily under more arduous conditions, Water Companies
often request that proposed modifications are physically modelled
during the design and development phase. The process of physical
modelling requires great expertise since it is not an exact science
but is the most accurate way of predicting fluid behaviour, apart
from taking measurements at full scale.

Two pump sump
models have been constructed by BHR Group to assess hydraulic performance
over a range of operating conditions. This has enabled difficulties
arising from the refurbishment of existing plant, in terms of control
strategy and structural modifications, to be identified at an early
stage in the design process. Two further structures are also being
physically modelled to optimise flow distribution.
